The Soup Kitchen

The concept of soup kitchens hit the mainstream of U.S. consciousness during the Great Depression, during a time when each person did the very best to take care of their family, friends and even strangers. That generation really knew how to stretch a dollar! My recipe for Super Foods Soup below is easy, nutritious, delicious and filling – really, what more can you ask for?
Great for a last minute meal, the stews below are all low in fat, high in protein and vegetables all you need is to accompany it with a salad, rice or potato for a great healthy meal.
In deference and respect the now –famous “Soup Nazi” character from the Seinfeld series, we at L’Hermitage Gourmet Emporium have developed an all new line of freshly prepared soups and stews for you to easily pick up and bring home to enjoy.  With the cooler winter months approaching, it is always a great treat and a classic comfort food to savor any night of the week.  Buy several varieties to keep in your freezer. And like the “Soup Nazi” our soups are renowned for their excellent quality, but our customer service interactions are not at all like the show’s character. Listed below are our newest collections:
Soups:
Butternut Squash and Apple
Organic Carrot Ginger
Red Pepper and Gouda
Chicken Tortilla
Organic Tomato Basil
Lobster Bisque with Sherry
Lemongrass Chicken Noodle Soup
English Pea with Mint

10 Important Questions to Ask when Selecting a Caterer

1.      How will the food be presented? A successful event encompasses much more than just good food. The presentation of the food is equally important, as is the quality and taste of each menu item.
2.      May I come in for a tasting? Where is the food prepared?  On this visit all good and reputable caterers will be happy to let you sample some of the food being produced, even if it is not the specific menu items you are interested in. This is the best way to get a true sense of the whole operation.
3.      Do you provide a written contract? A written contract protects both the caterer and the success of your function. Read all contracts thoroughly before signing, have all your questions answered, and never give a deposit without a written receipt.

Fabulous Florida Tomatoes!

The flavor of a juicy, ripe tomato still warm from the sun is the essence of summer and we've got that year round here in South Florida. The chances of capturing that true vine-ripened flavor are always better the closer to your kitchen a tomato is grown. But if you can't grow your own, you're not out of luck; you can find home-grown quality at farm stands and farmers' markets right here in Florida.

Taste of Spain

The big favorite (everywhere in Spain, no matter how far from the sea) is deep-fried fish: Calamares are rings of squid; Boquerones are fresh anchovies (you munch the whole crispy thing); Lenguado are small sole; Gambas are shrimp or prawns of varying sizes, usually served a La Plancha (in Spanish, "Frito" means deep-fried and "a la Plancha" means pan-fried) with heads, legs and all - you peel them yourself (it's messy, but fun).

Put a little Georgia in your dishes y'all

Southern spread, "America's love affair with elements of Southern cuisine," is one of the best trends according to Bon Appetit magazine. "Everything from grits to collard greens is making appearances in the nation's top restaurants." Today we are featuring the ingredients and flavors of Atlanta, Georgia. Peaches, Vidalia onions, and pecans are at the top of my list, and I have included some recipes to try in your kitchen.
For some interesting shopping, Atlanta is now home of The Irwin Street Market, a Parisian-style storefront that just opened in the Old Fourth Ward.  Not only can you find the best peaches, pecans and Vidalia onions at The Chef’s Garden, a miniature gourmet grocery, but there also are assorted shops in cozy open coves, and there seems to be something for everyone from creating your own ice cream flavor at Jake’s to getting an arrangement of exotic blooms at The Flower Bar.  There is The Dough Bar for decadent cookie concoctions and Picnic – you guessed it- a store that offers gourmet picnic baskets.  The Irwin Street Market -660 Irwin Street, Inman Park 404-586-9972.
Try these easy and delicious recipes, and play Ray Charles’ signature ballad –“Georgia on My Mind.” Enjoy a great day. Bon appetit!
